Resolved Question: Withholding first weeks pay as a "deposit"?

So my girlfriends mom just got a warehouse job in Pomona CA. She was referred by a current employee and her boss told her that she wont get paid for her first weeks pay. That they take that as a deposit. Keep in mind this is an $8/hr job. They need the money so she said she is going to just tough it out. I think this is ILLEGAL! She is here legally and has is a sweet lady! I am not sure why they told her that but when I heard that I was taken back. I want to know if someone knows if this is legal and who can she report it to? Is that a labor board deal or un-emploment deal? PLEASE anyone with info on a website I can print out or number to call that would be pefect! Thanks and God Bless! Thats is all they said was it was for a "deposit"? They didnt say for what and she didnt sign anything or was never asked to sign anything. I have a feeling they think she is an illegal using someone elses social and name.
